Today we see much of the same things with the ecumenical movement mingling the things of God and the things of the world among God’s people.  What I see is, spiritual discernment is gone and the spirit of compromise is at an all-time high.  Church services have turned into circus affairs.  Reminds me of when P.T. Barnum invited the famous Charles Spurgeon to come to America.  He told Spurgeon he could put up a special tent along side of the circus so Spurgeon could preach to the multitudes and that there would be no restrictions on what he preached.  If I remember the story correctly he offered him one thousand dollars per message!  I wonder how many of the evangelist of today would jump at that offer, especially since today many of the church services now resemble a circus.  Spurgeon sent a reply back to Mr. Barnum.  He said he could find his response in the Book of Acts of the Apostles: “And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?”  [Acts 13:10]

As a preacher there are places I won’t go to preach because I look at what their church stands for.  If I believe they are wrong in the doctrine taught in the Word of God I just won’t go there.  I have a church to preach in and I don’t need to go and to receive an offering for preaching there.  We’ve been given the warning: “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,”  [2 Corinthians 6:17]  Also we are told:  “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”  [Ephesians 5:11]  When people add the things of the world into the church service it usually starts with the music, then comes some more minor changes in what they stand for.  Remember the ecumenical movement is trying to appease everybody’s religion without offending anyone.  Paul warns us:  “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.  For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.  For your obedience is come abroad unto all men.  I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.”  [Romans 16:17-19]  Beware of the ecumenical movement!!

Can You and I Have Eternal Life? https://www.vanbornbaptist.com/can-you-and-i-have-eternal-life/ https://www.vanbornbaptist.com/can-you-and-i-have-eternal-life/#respond Sun, 13 May 2018 04:01:22 +0000 https://www.vanbornbaptist.com/?p=1901 Continue reading  Can You and I Have Eternal Life?]]> Can you and I have eternal life?  Eternal means: “Without end of existence or duration; everlasting; endless; immortal.”  I’m thinking of two Bible verses which describe eternal life and eternal fire: “And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?  [Matthew 19:16]  “Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”  [Jude:7]  Within these verses we see one speaks of eternal life and the other eternal fire.  As born again believers we need to have a firm conviction regarding our eternal soul.  A true salvation experience provides the gift of eternal life.  The grace of God is the only way that we can be saved.  “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”  [Ephesians 2:8-9]

Eternal life is the type of life God gives to believers at salvation.  The type of life that shall never cease because it is eternal, it goes on forever.  Paul addresses those who were teaching you are saved by grace but kept by works.  I’ve asked some who teach this thought line, what sin did they quit doing to get into heaven?  They reply, they are saved by grace.  Well then what sin do you have to commit to lose the gift of eternal life?  It is clear that if I didn’t do anything to get eternal life, other than trust in the blood of Christ, there’s no sin I could commit to lose eternal life and inherit the eternal fire spoken about.  Sad to say many who claim they trust in Christ, but are holding on by good works, have never trusted in the promise of eternal life that Christ gives.  Many like to say they are holding on until the end or believe they have to help persevere to the end in order to have eternal life.  They never trusted in the grace of Christ for their salvation.  I’ve heard people call eternal security the “damnable doctrine of the Baptist!”  I read an article where the writer called it the “comfortable doctrine”.  If you believe that there is any other way to get to heaven other than believing and calling, then you probably should not use this verse: “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”  [Romans 10:10]

Those go on to teach if you lose your love for Christ then you also lose your soul!  In fact they teach that many who’ve received the grace of God, have perished, because they didn’t continued to improve on the grace given to them.  Then they never received it by faith, they’re trusting in their works.  We already quoted the verse that said it was by grace and not by works.  Paul addressed this to the churches of Galatia: “O FOOLISH Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?  This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?  Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?”  [Galatians 3:1-3]  They don’t even realize that by thinking they have work to do to keep salvation they have not really trusted in the blood of Christ.  How do you believe you will be justified?  “That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”  [Titus 3:7]  I am so glad that I know in whom I have believed and that I have nothing to do to keep eternal life.  It is the gift of God.

Is a Quick Fix Worth It? https://www.vanbornbaptist.com/is-a-quick-fix-worth-it/ https://www.vanbornbaptist.com/is-a-quick-fix-worth-it/#respond Thu, 03 May 2018 22:37:44 +0000 https://www.vanbornbaptist.com/?p=1896 Continue reading Is a Quick Fix Worth It?]]> I saw an article in a newspaper the other day that said: “Most of us are too busy to better ourselves.”  Then came the sales pitch for the book: The Lazy Person’s Guide to Self-Improvement.  Most people do not like change.  Most are comfortable with their life-style and where they are in their life time.  But today there is a movement for quick fixes: “The 10-Minute Millionaire; The 5 Minute Healer, 10 Minutes to Better Health.”  The list can go on and on.  People like the short time table because, as most say, “I just don’t have time!”  I think of that when people say they just don’t have time to attend church.  Some denominations have gone to having an early Saturday evening service in order to accommodate those who assume that one hour per week for service will please God.  “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:  Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” [Hebrews 10:24-25]  Paul, speaking to the Corinth church concerning the day they assemble, a day churches have been assembling for years, Sunday;  “Upon the first day of the week let everyone of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gathering when I come.”  [1 Corinthians 16:2]  Why do people seek another day to fulfill their obligation to God?  It’s usually for their own convenience.  Many home Bible studies have been invented to help people feel they have kept their commitment to God.  I attended a home Bible study once because it did not interfere with our church services.  I soon found out they wanted to replace church with the home Bible study.  Have you ever been invited to a study which would take you out of your church?  Oh, they would say we are worshipping God, yet I just quoted a verse about not to forsaking the assembling of ourselves together in church.  Sorry, but home is not church.  It is easier to get people to come to a Bible study that does not take place in a church.  You know we live in the modern world where everything is on-line and we can even pick what type of sermon we want to hear!  But God has always worked with the called out assembly, which is called a church in the New Testament.  Remember our teaching on the local church?  This is where we are to bring our tithe.  Man’s positive teachings may sound good but they are not, “Thus saith the Lord”.  Some may emphasize their religious feelings, but I have heard that trying to have religious feelings can often end up making people feel less content with their lives.  I heard one saying that it was, “quite trying to be happy.”  When your efforts are to seek happiness it can actually make you feel more unhappy.  If you ask people how much time should be the length of a good sermon, most would respond, “about twenty minutes!”  Yes everyone likes the quick fix: whether it is 5, 10, or 15 minutes.  But think of it this way, in eternity how long will our services be in heaven?  How much singing will take place?  Will we get to pick our favorite song?  Which preacher will we be able to listen to?  Of course these thoughts are pretty silly since we will only be hearing from the Lord.  Oh no that sounds too much like going to church and hearing the preacher read the Bible.  The words happy and joy are mentioned in the Bible: “Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he the hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.”  [Proverbs 28:14]  “Thou will shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” [Psalm 16:11] Time spent serving the Lord here will bring eternal blessings in glory.
